South Africa defends decision on joint military exercises with Russia

South Africa's military has defended its decision to host joint military exercises with Russia and China, which are being held on the first anniversary of the launch of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The confrontational exercises were originally scheduled to take place last week, but the exercises, dubbed Mosi-II, began on Wednesday off South Africa's east coast.

But the launch of the exercises two days before the first anniversary of the start of the invasion of Ukraine led commentators to argue that holding the exercises at this time shows "insensitivity".

Over 350 members of the South African armed forces will take part in the exercises which will conclude on February 27. Russia is the "lead country" of these exercises, South Africa said.

The exercise will also include a Russian warship equipped with powerful Russian missile systems, Zircon, and Chinese weapons.

The Russian military said in a statement that the Russian warship "Admiral Gorshkov" will be used to practice tactics on how to repel threats that may come from the sea.

In these exercises, Brazil will participate as an observer. This is the second time that this country participates in this capacity in military exercises where South Africa, China and Russia have been involved./ REL
