The Pope condemns the war in Ukraine, calls for a ceasefire and negotiations

Two days before the first anniversary of the Russian occupation of Kiev, Pope Francis said the war in Ukraine is "absurd and cruel" and called for a ceasefire and negotiations.

During his weekly address on February 22, the Pope called the first anniversary of the war a "sad anniversary" and said he is close to the Ukrainian people.

He said that "real victory" in Ukraine "cannot be built on the ruins."

Even in his Christmas speech on December 25, the Pope had called for an immediate end to the war.

The Pope has considered the war in Ukraine as "madness".

Last year he declared that "innocents pay for war", and that arms dealers who profit from war are "criminals who kill humanity".

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

He calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions./REL
