After US attacks on Iran / Dollar marks unexpected recovery

The dollar rose on Monday as uncertainty over the Israel-Iran conflict continued following US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.

At around 2.45 CEST, the Dollar Index had risen 0.61% in intraday trading to 99.31.

During the month, it showed an increase of 0.19%, although its value from the beginning of the year was still down by almost 9%, failing to recover recent policy-related losses.

US President Donald Trump said the weekend attacks had caused "monumental damage", although some Iranian officials downplayed the impact. The full extent of the damage could not immediately be determined by the UN nuclear watchdog.

"In this morning's trading session, the dollar marked an expected recovery. The demonstration of American military strength, as well as fears of higher oil prices, weakened the euro," said American economists.

Higher oil prices are likely to boost inflation and discourage the U.S. Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates in the near future. That would be bad news for American consumers, but it would also make the dollar more attractive to investors./CNA
