Solar energy reaches record 13.2% of total production in 2025/ Grid losses fall

The rush of investors towards investments in photovoltaics has led to a significant increase in the share of energy produced by the sun during 2025, which for the first time in history has reached 13.2% of the total, up from 6.4% last year.

INSTAT reported the energy balance for 2025.

During 2025, available electricity reached 8,345 GWh, compared to 8,171 GWh in 2024, marking an increase of 2.1%.

Net domestic electricity production reached 7,468 GWh, from 7,837 GWh in 2024, marking a decrease of 4.7%.

This production was realized by public hydroelectric power plants at the rate of 45.2%, by private and concessionary producers at the rate of 41.6% and by other producers (other renewable energies) at the rate of 13.2% of the net domestic production of electricity.

Gross electricity imports (energy in receipt) reached 3,375 GWh, up from 2,669 GWh in 2024, marking an increase of 26.5%. Meanwhile, gross electricity exports (energy in delivery) reached 2,498 GWh, up from 2,335 GWh in 2024, marking an increase of 7.0%.

Public hydropower plants, in 2025, produced 3,374 GWh, down from 4,085 GWh in 2024, marking a 17.4% decrease in production.

Private and concessionary producers produced 3,109 GWh, down from 3,245 GWh a year earlier, marking a decrease of 4.2%.

Other producers (other renewable energies) produced 984 GWh, up from 507 GWh in 2024, recording an increase of 94.3%.

The electricity exchange (the difference between gross energy exports and imports) in 2025 resulted in a negative level of −877 GWh, compared to a negative level of −334 GWh in 2024.

Network losses reached 1,593 GWh in 2025, from 1,614 GWh in 2024, marking a decrease of 1.3%.

The share of network losses in total available electricity in 2025 is 19.1%, compared to 19.8% in 2024, recording a decrease of 0.7 percentage points.

During 2025, transmission losses decreased by 3.9%, while distribution losses decreased by 1.0%, compared to 2024.

The use of electricity by consumers in 2025 reached 6,752 GWh, from 6,556 GWh in 2024, marking an increase of 3.0%.

Electricity use by household consumers increased by 6.8%, reaching 3,641 GWh in 2025, from 3,409 GWh in 2024.

While usage by non-household consumers decreased slightly, reaching 3,111 GWh in 2025, from 3,147 GWh in 2024, marking a decrease of 1.2%./Monitor.al
