Stock markets in "free fall"/ Fuel prices in Albania rising again

The situation in the fuel market in Albania is alarming for citizens' pockets, as the price of oil at retail outlets has reached record levels.

In a field survey conducted this Monday by CNA,  it is noted that oil prices at various points range from 211 to 214 lek per liter, while gasoline is traded near the level of 199 lek, as follows:

This price increase reflects an inexplicable rigidity of the domestic market, as on international exchanges oil has suffered a drastic drop of around 9% in just the last 24 hours, dropping to the level of $96 per barrel.

While the world is reflecting this significant decrease, in Albania the crisis in the Middle East is being used as an "alibi" to keep prices artificially high. The contrast becomes even stronger when compared to the region, where in Kosovo and North Macedonia oil costs on average 50 to 55 lek cheaper than in our country.

In this climate of economic tension, Prime Minister Edi Rama declared on Sunday that the government will return to the Transparency Board regime to control any possible abuse, although he claimed that so far no violations by traders have been observed. Rama promised a temporary intervention with a 20% excise tax reduction to ease the burden on vehicle users.

"The increased level of benefit that will come to the state coffers from the price increase, whatever it may be, after the reduction in excise duty, will only go to protect pensioners, only to support pensioners," Rama said.

Beyond promises of reserves and the introduction of a new public factor in the market, today's reality on fuel tables remains unchanged, leaving Albanian consumers paying the highest bill in Europe in relation to their income, despite the global stock market showing clear signs of decline. /CNA
