"Drug Lord"/ Italian authorities release Alket Hatina from prison

The Italian authorities have released from prison Alket Hatina, who is known by everyone as the "Drug Lord". The 50-year-old was arrested in August this year in Durrës with the aim of extraditing him to Italy.

He was wanted internationally by Interpol Rome, after the Court of Appeal sentenced him to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking.

But after the completed procedures, the Italian court in Milan announced that Hatija has served her sentence in Albania.

The arrest of Alket Hatia in August: 

In August, after the arrest, the police announced that Hatija collaborated with 40 other citizens during the period 2003-2004, for the activity of selling and trafficking the narcotic substance heroin, from Albania to Italy.

This was not the first time that the 50-year-old was arrested in Albania, as he was also handcuffed in 2017, based on a search warrant from the Italian authorities, with the intention of extraditing him to Italy.

On March 5, 2018, the Court of Durrës rejected the request for the extradition of Alket Hastija, and removed the security measure of prison arrest.

According to the Italian authorities, only during the years 2003-2004, the "Drug Lord" managed to traffic in Milan 350 kg of heroin and 190 kg of cocaine worth about 40 million euros. He was arrested for the first time in 2008 at the request of the Italian authorities./CNA
