Elections in the European Parliament/Alemanno: There is a lot of uncertainty,

Alberto Alemanno, a professor at the business school in Paris, has spoken about the elections in the European Parliament.

In an interview in Public Square with Ditmir Bushatin Alemanno, it was stated that these elections are second rate as they are not necessarily the most important elections for the citizens.

According to Professor Alemanno, participation in these elections is limited. He emphasizes that the 2024 elections will be important because they will determine the political priorities for the European Commission, which is de facto the executive of the EU.

It seems that these priorities are changing, shifting the focus from the new green deal to an agenda that will be more brown than green: industrial policies in the field of defense.

He said that there is a lot of uncertainty in these elections.

"European elections have historically been second-rate elections. This means that they are not the most important elections in the minds of citizens, as they do not necessarily reflect their political preferences.

Participation is very limited, approximately 45-50% since 1976, when European citizens had the opportunity to vote for the first time.

The 2024 elections will be particularly important, because they will determine the political priorities for the European Commission, which is the defacto executive of the EU.

It seems that these priorities are changing, shifting the focus from the new green deal to an agenda that will be more brown than green: industrial policies in the field of defense.

Since the European elections are nothing more than 27 parallel elections, as each country decides for itself how to elect representatives in Strasbourg, it will not be easy to analyze the results of these elections.

It is clear that we expect a major shift of the pendulum from the left-wing center, which is the current center of gravity in the EP, to the more conservative right-wing center, where the EP is dominated by several political parties, political groups, such like the conservatives led by Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, Mr. Morawiecki in Poland, but also by the parties of identity and Democracy, by people like Marine Le Pen or AfD in Germany.

For the first time they have a weighty determining position in that parliament.

In short, we can expect a more fragmented EP where the main traditional parties, the popular socialist parties and the liberals will not necessarily be able to have a parliamentary majority in support of the future EC.

So there is a lot of uncertainty in these elections", he said./ CNA
