November 9th Elections/ Celibashi: We will test the use of AI in counting

The Head of the Central Election Commission, Ilirjan Celibashi, participated in the regional conference "Oversight of Digitalization in Electoral Processes: Towards Convergence between the EU and the Western Balkans".

Celibashi announced during his speech that in the partial elections to be held in 5 municipalities of the country on November 9, the use of Artificial Intelligence will also be applied. Specifically, he said that the use of Artificial Intelligence will be tested in the counting and evaluation of ballots and in the issuance of results.

"We have begun in the experimental version the use of Artificial Intelligence to search for electoral information and to provide assistance to the electoral administration but also to other entities involved in the electoral process.

On November 9, mayoral by-elections will be held in 5 municipalities across the country. Work is underway to apply for the first time the use of Artificial Intelligence in counting and evaluating ballots and in reporting results. This will serve as a test and will not replace manual vote counting, which will remain the official method of reference for this aspect of the electoral process.

"This entire digitalization process, supported by funding from international partners, has not only increased efficiency in the administration of electoral processes, but has also consolidated the reputation of the CEC as an independent institution," Celibashi said, among other things. /CNA
