You stretch your legs a little, the situation suddenly becomes freer, and the need to achieve your goal supplies all the purpose you need. Suddenly, you notice the surroundings too, and that's what makes this collection of European walking holidays particularly appealing, because they explore some of the continent's most dramatic and interesting landscapes.

Madeira, the Dolomites and the mountains of Albania all feature, with difficulty levels to suit every adventurer - and a good night's sleep at the end of each day almost guaranteed.

Steep cliffs and bare limestone cliffs make the Albanian Mountains reminiscent of the majestic Dolomites of Italy.

But there is a striking difference, by Western European standards. It is a place of rudimentary infrastructure and isolated villages, now protected by the Albanian Alps National Park; and the sense of seeing a mountain range in a more pristine state adds an extra thrill to this week-long exploration.

Five days of fairly strenuous hiking culminate in a crossing of the 1,795m Valbona Pass, accompanied by pack horses to carry your luggage. Overnight accommodation is in a range of small hotels and local guesthouses./ The Times
