Behavior analyst Genta Kapllani spoke in today's episode of the podcast "Different, but together", regarding the management of "meltdown" situations in children with autism.

Kapllani has shown how a situation can be prevented from heading towards a "meltdown." She stated that in any type of inappropriate or problematic behavior, a behavioral analysis of the child is definitely recommended.

He also emphasized that the emphasis should be placed on the function of behavior.

"In any type of inappropriate behavior, problematic or challenging behavior that we encounter, we definitely recommend behavior analysis. I mentioned that we have a behavioral form and a function of this behavior. The form is an observation that we make of the other, so with crying, screaming, hitting oneself or another, throwing an object. But it is important to emphasize the function of the behavior. So, what will the child achieve through this behavior. Usually we have two separate categories, the function to get something or to avoid something. In the case of meltdown, it is mainly to avoid. So an analysis of the situation is made, what causes the meltdown behavior and what is the consequence, what will the child achieve through this behavior. Even in this case, regardless of the fact that it is uncontrolled behavior by the child, he is trying to communicate something. We need to see what is the sensory stimulus that is disturbing the child. If it is noise, then the function is to avoid a noisy environment," Kapllani said. /CNA
