"Japan's secret is the teacher"/ The call for the restoration of authority in Albanian schools

Former Deputy Minister of Education Nora Malaj, in an interview with CNA TV, noted that the secret to the success of the Japanese education system lies in the extraordinary appreciation of teachers.

She said that in Japan, the teacher enjoys the status of an emperor, the salary of a minister, and the full support of the state leadership. Making the comparison with Albania, she recalled that once the teacher was the most respected figure in the community and students considered him a moral and intellectual authority.

According to her, over the years, the relationship between students and teachers has changed, while respect for the teacher is no longer at the same levels as before. The former deputy minister emphasized that today the main challenge is to restore balance in the Albanian education system.

She underlined that the school principal and the way he supports and evaluates the teaching staff have a crucial role in this process. In conclusion, she stated that the teacher should always remain “the best student in the class”, being an example for the younger generations.

"When they asked Japan and said how is it possible that your education system is wonderful and where is the strength, the strength is in the teacher. Because he said he has the respect of the emperor, so he has the status of the emperor, he has the salary of a minister and he has the appreciation of a leader. Which means, if we and society go back to when once in my time the teacher was the brightest figure and when we passed on the street and saw the teacher we had the same emotion, sometimes we instinctively took our hands out of our pockets. Now times have changed because children have also received their rights. But it is very important to regulate these balances between the rights and obligations that a child has and the rights and obligations that a teacher has. For this reason, the head of the school is very important, in the way he creates the climate, in the way he adapts to the environment, in the way he understands the teachers and let's not forget one thing, the teacher is the best student in the class. Which means that he spends his whole life learns, he reads his whole life ," said Malaj.
