European Commission Report: Veliaj's arrest by SPAK an achievement

The European Commission has compiled a draft report on the rule of law, signed on June 9, which discussed the justice system.

This draft report evaluates the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime as an institution with positive results in the fight against corruption and crime.

The European Commission has emphasized in the draft report that despite increased political pressure and organized crime groups, SPAK continues its anti-corruption fight.

In addition to evaluating SPAK's work against corruption and organized crime, the European Commission's report highlights that the arrest of Erion Veliaj is an achievement, while there is concern regarding the reactions and attacks made by the majority and Prime Minister Edi Rama himself towards the prosecutor and judge in the case.

According to the report, the reactions against SPAK and the institution's prosecutors are unprecedented.

"The investigation and arrest of an elected official, confirmed by the SPAK Special Court in February 2025, triggered unprecedented public reactions from the executive and legislative branches of government, including attempts to exert pressure on SPAK and judicial institutions. This raises serious concerns," the European Commission document states.

This report further mentions the scandal of how the State Police failed to take measures regarding the rally held in front of SPAK by Erion Veliaj's supporters, thus endangering the prosecutors.

"SPAK published two letters of complaint addressed to the Ministry of Interior and the State Police for the failure to strengthen security and protect its staff during a protest in front of the SPAK building," the report states./ CNA
