AUVA returns to Albania 485 sheep and 25 lambs banned in Kosovo territory

The Food and Veterinary Agency announces that, in cooperation with the competent authorities, it has taken a decision to return to the country of origin prohibited animals, which were illegally introduced into the territory of the Republic of Kosovo.

On 16.11.2025, the Border Police, Customs and Veterinary Service detained in Prizren a group of smuggled sheep and goats, which had entered unauthorized from the Republic of Albania.

Because these animals did not possess veterinary health certificates and posed a risk for the spread of contagious diseases, the FVA has returned 485 sheep and 25 lambs to their country of origin, Albania. The actions taken were carried out in close cooperation with the Kosovo Police, Border Police, Customs and the State Prosecutor.

The FVA continues to implement rigorous and continuous monitoring of the health status and movements of all categories of animals within the country's territory, with the aim of preventing the introduction and spread of contagious diseases that could damage the livestock and the agricultural economy.

At the same time, the AUVA informs the general public that the import of live animals is allowed to be carried out only through authorized border points, where mandatory documentary, identification and veterinary controls are carried out, in order to avoid any potential risk to animal health, food safety and public health. /CNA
