A little security, even less punishments for the food market in Albania

It is August 20 and the temperature reaches 35 degrees, but the residents of "Petro Nini Luarasi" street in Tirana are in the market doing their weekly shopping. Many of them buy fruits and vegetables in the "Vath Koreshi" alley, while others are shopping with the residents of rural areas, who sell milk and eggs on the sidewalk.

Petriti and his wife talk to street vendors and buy milk from them.

"We got the milk from the villagers, they have it fresh," says Petriti. "We go out every day we get it, we try to come as soon as possible, but sometimes we come late," he adds.

The capital is the main market for the products of the residents of rural areas, who bring milk, eggs, chicken, lamb or beef every day, as well as fruits and vegetables from their gardens. But they do not have a special market and sell their products in alleys or sidewalks.

Demand for fresh country produce is also high in Tirana, regardless of trading conditions.

"The quality of the cow's milk we get from the villagers is higher, we also make the yogurt ourselves. There were times that it was broken, that we arrived late and the bin stayed in the sun, but we still think that we eat more safely this way," Petriti said.

But food safety experts disagree.

Kristaq Bërxholi, retired lecturer of Veterinary Medicine, says that the sale of products in non-refrigerated conditions is strictly prohibited and "must be stopped immediately".

"The sale of products on the street such as milk, meat, cheese, eggs and meat is categorically prohibited. The world has sounded the alarm, as climate change has greatly increased insects, parasites, but also viruses and bacteria that these products transmit," said Bërxholi.

"Many people can be infected through food, many diseases can spread, so a lot of care is required," he added./ Reporteri.al
