The World Health Organization and US health authorities said Friday they are closely monitoring a new variant of the coronavirus, although its potential impact is unknown.

The WHO has classified the new variant as under observation "due to the large number (more than 30) of mutations it carries," said the organization's bulletin on the pandemic.

So far, the new BA.2.86 variant has been identified in Israel, Denmark and the United States.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have also said that they are monitoring the variant.

Most countries that have established surveillance systems for the virus have already suspended all operations, saying the coronavirus is no longer severe and not worth the burden - a move that has been condemned by the WHO, calling for more monitoring.

In the latest reporting period, from July 17 to August 13, more than 1.4 million new cases of coronavirus were registered, along with more than 2,300 deaths, according to a WHO statement.

This number of infections represents an increase of 63 percent, compared to the previous 28-day period, while the number of victims is 56 percent smaller.

The new coronavirus was first reported in December 2019 in Wuhan, China.

The World Health Organization declared the coronavirus as a pandemic on March 11, 2020.

More than 6.9 million people have died since the outbreak of the pandemic worldwide.

The United States has recorded the highest number of victims, followed by India and Brazil./ REL
