Do depression and anxiety increase tumor risk?

Do depression and anxiety increase tumor risk?

Depression affects about 5% of the world's adult population. People with depression often also have other mental health problems, most notably anxiety.

Past research shows that about 40-50% of people with anxiety will also have depression. And this percentage is similar for people with high depression who also experience anxiety.

Because of the major impact they can have on the body, depression and anxiety are linked to an increased risk of certain diseases, including heart disease, such as heart attack and stroke.

Additionally, previous studies have linked depression and anxiety to a higher risk of developing certain types of tumors.

Now, researchers from the University Medical Center Groningen have discovered evidence that contradicts the theory that depression and anxiety increase tumor risk.

They analyzed data from more than 300,000 adults from the International Consortium on Psychosocial Factors and Tumor Incidence.

The researchers found no link between depression and anxiety and, in general, breast, prostate, colorectal and alcohol-related cancers.

The study was recently published in the journal CancerTrusted Source, a journal peer-reviewed by the American Cancer Society./ CNA
