Less than 5,000 steps a day is enough to maintain good health and fitness, although until now the prevailing opinion is that 10,000 steps a day are recommended.

A study by American and Polish scientists, in which more than 226,000 people worldwide were analyzed, showed that 4,000 steps a day are enough to start reducing the risk of premature death from any cause, reports the BBC.

Just over 2,300 steps a day are enough for a healthy heart and blood vessels, researchers say, noting that the more active people are, the more they contribute to their health.

The study also shows that every additional 1,000 steps over 4,000 reduces the risk of premature death by 15 percent up to 20,000 steps.

A team from the Medical University of Lodz in Poland and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the US found that walking has a beneficial effect on people, regardless of gender, age or where they live. However, the greatest health benefits were seen in those under 60.

According to the World Health Organization, insufficient physical activity is responsible for the death of 3.2 million people each year, the fourth most common cause worldwide.
