Medical breakthrough/ Microchip in the brain allows the paralyzed to regain

Health experts have thought that when severe spinal cord injury impairs the function of the central nervous system there is no cure.

However, researchers at Northwell Health in New York have challenged that assumption with a game-changing discovery.

In March 2023, researchers, surgeons and bioelectrical medicine engineers at Northwell's Feinstein Institute for Medical Research successfully enabled a man to move and feel with his paralyzed arm and hand.

In their new clinical trial, the team performed a 15-hour open-brain surgery to restore communication between the body and brain of Keith Thomas of Massapequa, who has been living with paralysis since 2020.

Northwell Health colleagues developed Artificial Intelligence algorithms, brain implants and innovative stimulation technology to form the "double nerve bypass".

They implanted microchips in human brains. This microchip forms an electronic "bridge" that facilitates the flow of information throughout the body, spinal cord, and brain.

Chad Bouton, a professor in the Institute for Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institute, developed the technology and was the experiment's principal investigator.

"This is the first time that the brain, body and spinal cord have been linked together electronically in a paralyzed person to restore consistent movement and sensation," said Chad Bouton.

Researchers expect the technology to help people with paralysis "live fuller and more independent lives."/ CNA
