A response to Erion Veliaj's lobbyists

Today, Erion Veliaj's lobbying and defense studios, paid $220,000 or more by the mayor and his brother, have made a statement.

On the 1st anniversary of his arrest, Erion Veliaj's lobbying studios say that the mayor cannot be arrested because there is a decision by the Venice Commission.

This latest error is not surprising, as we have seen others before. Perhaps they justify the money they pocket and need these attitudes because they perhaps think that justice is done through lobbying and propaganda, or even deception, attacks, and accusations.

In the statement made, the defenders of Tirana's Zdroms take as an example the case of Istanbul, where Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested.

But the Venice Commission's report on the detention of incumbent mayors is not related to the EU and European countries, but is related to Istanbul, it is related to Turkey, where the opposition claims that justice is controlled by the ruling party of President Erdogan, while in Albania, justice is claimed by the opposition to be controlled by the ruling party of Erion Veliaj and Edi Rama.

“76 mayors and representatives of the ‘B40 Balkan Cities Network’ – coming from parties and political backgrounds across the ideological spectrum – issued a joint letter denouncing the detention of Mayor Veliaj. They adopted a finding in the 2025 Venice Commission Report of the Council of Europe that ‘the use of pre-trial detention against incumbent mayors constitutes a serious risk to democratic governance’, because it deprives citizens of their right to representation, by removing, without due process, their elected representatives.

Mayor Veliaj’s detention must end. “Continuing to hold Mayor Veliaj in detention and denying him basic due process rights – such as the opportunity to review the evidence against him – betrays Albania’s democratic promise, casts serious doubt on the progress of its reforms and could jeopardize its EU membership aspirations,” Veliaj’s lobbying studios declare.

First, a Western country has not been chosen, a country where we aspire to go, that is, to the EU, to the West. No endangering Albania's path to the EU, on the contrary, the truth is the opposite. The fight against corruption and the crackdown on the highest political, executive and administrative levels are the right highway to the EU.

Secondly, the Venice Commission's report on Turkey is being made because the person who headed the Istanbul Municipality, Ekrem Imamoglu, is an opposition figure, while Erion Veliaj is not, Veliaj's party is in power.

Erion Veliaj is the one who voted for justice reform, Erion Veliaj has campaigned for justice reform, Erion Veliaj's party has won several elections through the use of propaganda, appearing as the standard-bearers of justice reform.

We recall the "iron b*tches" who had control over SPAK, statements made during the AFF elections a few years ago.

What does Veliaj claim?

The reform was made by Veliaj's party, the Socialist Party, which has been in power for 12 years, and voted for by itself. The reform was also voted for by the opposition, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, who is under indictment by SPAK and under security measures, as well as the leader of the Liberal Party, Ilir Meta, (who brought the socialists and claims to have united the 140 votes for the justice reform, is in prison on several charges).

When they arrested Saliu or Meta, these allegations did not appear, although neither one nor the other had any evidence to destroy, while Veliaj was caught on several occasions destroying evidence, not to mention attacks on prosecutors and judges.

Unlike Turkey and the Venice reference, Veliaj's party is in power, which made him mayor and claims that with this reform it has made in justice it has also won a governing mandate.

If he were part of the opposition, he could claim it as in the case of the mayor of Istanbul, but no, Berisha and Meta claim it, Veliaj has no choice.

Now either Saliu and Iliri, who are themselves under indictment and in prison, have justice, or Edi Rama has it, who imprisons them and Veliaj, or no one has it under control, but it is supported and monitored by the internationals, and the latter seems to be the truth.

Perhaps Erion Veliaj connects his claims to the time when he was with Sali Berisha to oust the Socialist Party from power and is confusing the times.

It also depends on what lies Erion Veliaj told the lobbyists with those fraudulent reports where prosecutor Ols Dado also appeared, as if he was an activist of the Democratic Party. While the next time with the "famous" request for a building permit and the refusal by Veliaj. A request and refusal that have not been made public yet to this day...

The defender's lobbyists would do well to clarify this once and then tell us the nonsense about the mayor of Istanbul that they bring to us as a parallel with Erion Veliaj when they are completely opposite cases, and most simply, Imamoglu is an opponent of Erdogan, while Veliaj is simply a pawn of Edi Rama (or Zdrom as he likes)./ CNA
