Adoption of the Law "On Gender Equality"/ European Commission:

The European Commission has welcomed the adoption in the Parliament of the law "On Gender Equality". In their reaction, the EC states that the adoption of this law has nothing to do with personal or political agendas, but emphasizes that it is an essential step towards EU membership.

It also further states that the law on gender equality follows the recommendation in the Commission's Annual Report on Albania for 2025, which called on Albania to ensure a high level of ambition and is in line with European standards for this law.

The EC has described the adoption of the law as a sign of Albania's commitment to implementing key reforms in the framework of EU membership.

"Approximation to the EU acquis is part of the accession process, which all candidate countries must ensure.  This is not about personal or political agendas, but is an essential step towards EU membership.  As Commissioner Kos emphasized in her social media post yesterday, "Gender equality and non-discrimination are an integral part of EU law."

These are core EU values ??and fundamental rights.   We welcome the adoption of the Gender Equality Law by the Albanian Parliament last night.  This follows the recommendation in the Commission's Annual Report on Albania for 2025, which called on Albania to ensure a high level of ambition and is in line with the EU acquis and European standards for this law.  This is another sign of Albania's commitment to implementing key reforms in the context of EU membership," the European Commission said in a statement .

The Parliament approved the draft law "On Gender Equality" article by article in yesterday's session. The draft law, which was debated for several hours, was approved with 77 votes in favor and 36 against. Opposition MPs voted against the adoption of the draft law. /CNA
