Milot Bridge temporarily closed/ ARRSH: Serious risk to the stability and safety

The Albanian Road Authority announced today that the Milot Bridge will be temporarily closed.  

The Milot road-rail bridge, with a length of 788 meters, poses a serious risk to the stability and safety of the crossing, as a result of:

• significant damage to the supporting foundations,

• pronounced erosion in the base, due to uncontrolled exploitation of river gravel,

• and erosion throughout the riverbed.

Based on technical expertise and taking into account the heavy traffic, especially during the summer season, the decision has been made to completely close the bridge and interrupt traffic, until the completion of the emergency intervention project that is being drafted by the Albanian Road Authority, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Tirana. This intervention will be implemented immediately in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the construction of a completely new bridge is foreseen by the ARA as part of the "100 Bridges" program, which is being implemented with the support of the World Bank.

During the intervention period, we recommend using these alternative routes:

• Main road Lezha – Milot

• Nation Road

According to ARS, this intervention is essential to ensure the safety of the entire community. We are aware of the difficulties and concerns that the temporary closure of the bridge may cause, but this measure is necessary to avoid greater risks and to ensure a stable and safe infrastructure in the future. /CNA
