Malësia e Madhe has been engulfed by 7 fires in the last 48 hours. The most dangerous fire was in the village of Kamicë, where dozens of hectares of medicinal plants and fruit trees were engulfed by flames.
"During the last 48 hours, we have had 7 fires spread from Sterbepi, Jubicë, Kamicë and up to the village of Flaka, that is, the entire lake shore in a large area of hundreds of hectares, all with thorns, bushes but also medicinal plants and fruit trees. It was a large area where the intervention of the entire firefighting staff with 4 vehicles was required and an intervention that lasted over 4 hours and the reason was that the terrain was bad. We had no roads to intervene, an area with canals, with holes and therefore we had a hard time managing it and during this entire length where the fires broke out, there was a residential house above where the houses were being carefully protected and thanks to our intervention it was possible not to damage any houses and they also saved the livestock that they had let loose in the fields and it was managed well", - Besnik Hasa, Manager, Malësi e Madhe Fire Department.
During the operations to extinguish the flames of the Fire in Malësia e Madhe, the fire fighters took care of preserving the lives of people, property and livestock. The Administration of Protected Areas, volunteers and municipal employees also provided assistance.
"We had the support of ADZM and we had employees of the Malësi e Madhe municipality, volunteers from the villages. The fires are mostly due to carelessness. They enter to clear a small field, but in temperatures of 40 degrees and with the wind blowing over 50 km/h, it is impossible for them to control the fires they start. The villagers come out with their own motorbikes and think they can control it and the situation goes away. We can't manage it, not them. Last night, in the late hours of the night, it became possible to completely isolate the fires and there are no more fire sources in Malësi e Madhe. We also had several other fires in Gruemirë, in Kerraj, at the end of Bria, at the foot of the mountain where houses were at risk and we have followed these fires everywhere with our vehicles and we have not let the fires get close to the houses, making it possible to completely extinguish the flames," said Hasa.
Due to the carelessness of citizens who start fires to burn brambles and then spread, causing considerable damage, firefighters are calling for more caution. There are no active fires in the Shkodra region and so far there have been fires only in Malësia e Madhe, mainly. /CNA
