The European Commission has recommended the opening of the first chapters of negotiations with Albania.

The European Commission has officially recommended to the European Council that meets on December 14-15 to approve the start of the examination of the first chapters of the negotiations with Albania by the end of this year.

The commissioner for expansion, Oliver Varhelyi, said that this positive decision reflects the achievements in the reform of justice, vetting and the work of SPAK.

"The process of reviewing the Albanian legislation in recent months has progressed positively and without problems. The Albanian authorities have demonstrated a high level of commitment to fulfill the requests presented during this process. The implementation of the comprehensive reform has continued successfully and also the process of re-evaluation of judges and prosecutors called veting is progressing satisfactorily. The special structure for the fight against corruption SPAK has continued to achieve concrete results on the ground. Albania has also demonstrated the same full approach to the EU's foreign and security policy, giving us a strong signal of this country's determination to fully join the EU. Our objective is to open the first chapter of negotiations on the fundamental issues within the end of 2023 with Albania," said Varhelyi.

In addition to the positive decision for Albania, the EC gave the green light but with conditions for negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia./ CNA
