The Municipality of Lushnja today removed the title of "Honorary Citizen" from Gjergj Velos.

The decision comes after Democratic councilors in the Lushnja Municipality filed a request on December 17 to remove this title.

The request was made on the grounds that during the communist regime, Velo interned peasant families who opposed the system.

The news of the removal of the title was made public by the head of the opposition group in the Bashiak Council, Klement Çelaj.

In a reaction on social media, Çelaj writes that the decision taken is a decision that should have been taken a long time ago. Çelaj states that the decision is not simply administrative, but also a moral punishment.

The honor of the city serves neither compromised individuals nor the regimes that produce them.

Today, the Lushnja Municipal Council did what should have been done long ago: it removed the title of "Honorary Citizen" from Gjergj Velo.

A title that cannot rest on the shoulders of anyone who has been part of, a voice for, or a beneficiary of a regime that oppressed, silenced, and humiliated people.

This decision is not simply administrative. It is an act of moral condemnation.

Punishment for a system that tried to normalize injustice and wrap it in titles and privileges.

Lushnja has no debt to anyone who has served the government against its citizens. On the contrary, it has a debt to memory, to the victims, to the generations that seek the truth, not its embellishment.

Honorary titles are not a political shield nor a historical whitewash.

They are removed when the masks fall.

An individual who has honored an unjust regime is not honored.
