Supreme Court judge resigns from reviewing Veliaj's case/Here's who

Supreme Court Judge Ilir Panda has resigned from examining the case related to the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.

Even in the first trial, Judge Panda resigned after declaring a conflict of interest and withdrawing from the case, claiming that he had close ties to Ajola Xoxa.

Meanwhile, official sources from the Supreme Court have confirmed to CNA that Judge Sandër Simoni has been appointed rapporteur for the case following Panda's resignation.

The review in the High Court comes after the decision by the Constitutional Court on the security measure, a decision issued in July 2025, for Mayor Veliaj.

The latter has been in prison since February 10 of last year after facing 13 charges for 5 serious criminal offenses, corruption, abuse of office, laundering the proceeds of crime, concealing assets, and bringing prohibited items into the cell.

We also recall that the arrested mayor, for about 1 year, the arrested mayor continues with the saga of dragging out court processes in the GJKKO using various strategies starting from illnesses, accidents, files, the glass cage, etc., as he is afraid to face the facts and evidence, and therefore avoids justice and delays the process.

Veliaj has used various excuses to not attend the GJKKO hearings, while on the other hand, he has long been carrying out an aggressive attack on the judiciary, SPAK, prosecutors and judges with his media soldiers. /CNA
