The court of Ioannina has rejected the Albanian state's request for the extradition of Laert Haxhiu, who was arrested in May in Greece.

His defense lawyer claimed during the court session that his client's life is at risk in our country. The court of Ioannina has left Haxhi in prison only for the charge of leaving the scene of the accident and that of disturbing the public peace.

Haxhiu was sentenced by the Lushnje Judicial District Court, in 2017, to 18 years of imprisonment, for the criminal offenses of "Murder in qualifying circumstances", remaining in the attempt and "Unauthorized possession and production of combat weapons, explosive weapons and ammunition".

He is also on trial at the Special Court for the Lushnja massacre with two victims and 1 injured.

In Ioannina, the Greek police made it possible to capture and arrest him. This citizen was caught with a fake Greek residence permit.

The State Police continues the close cooperation with partners, for the identification and capture of citizens declared internationally wanted for criminal offenses in various fields, as well as the exchange of real-time information on cross-border criminal activities, with the aim of identifying and capturing persons or criminal groups that carry out these activities. /CNA
