Attacks on journalists / SafeJournalists calls on institutions to react

SafeJournalists has reacted to the events that have affected some journalists in the country.

In an article published, the network which represents more than 8,200 media professionals in the Western Balkans calls on the relevant institutions to react as soon as possible and show that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated.

In light of recent events affecting journalists in Albania, the SafeJournalists Network feels compelled to express concerns and call for collective attention to disturbing incidents involving Armand Bajram (A2CNN), Gjergj Zefi (Pamphlet) and Parid Dado (Vizion Plus).

The physical attack on Gjergj Zefi, the owner of the Pamphlet portal, on the public streets of Tirana on October 3, 2023, has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in Albania. We appreciate the immediate response of the Police and the initiation of investigations into this act of violence. However, the SafeJournalists Network demands that the investigation be not only swift, but also thorough and transparent, ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The incident with Parid Dado, Vizion Plus cameraman, and Flamur Noka, deputy of the Democratic Party of Albania, during a parliamentary session on October 5, 2023, cannot be underestimated. The act of physical aggression against a media worker raises concerns about the safety and respect that was given to journalists in active political spaces. Although we accept the apology of Mr. Noka and the intervention of the Speaker of the Assembly, Lindita Nikolla, it is essential that this incident prompts a wider reflection on the cultivation of a culture of zero tolerance towards any form of intimidation or attack on journalists, especially by politicians and public figures.

Ky incident nënvizon nevojën për një vështrim të kujdesshëm në rritjen e masave mbrojtëse digjitale dhe zbatimin e protokolleve të qëndrueshme të sigurisë kibernetike për komunitetin gazetaresk. Rrjeti SafeJournalists u kërkon autoriteteve përkatëse që ta hetojnë këtë rast me përpikëri për të siguruar llogaridhënie dhe për të parandaluar përsëritjen e shkeljeve të tilla digjitale në të ardhmen.
