Feast of Saint George/ Archbishop Joan: The lives of the saints ignite the light

Today, Orthodox believers celebrate the Day of Saint George the Trophy-Bearer.

On this day, the Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania, Joan, led the divine liturgy at the church of "Saint George" in Durrës.

His Beatitude John in his sermon called for constantly reading the lives of the saints as spiritual nourishment. The Archbishop stated that by reading the lives of the saints we can begin to model ourselves after them and the light of faith can be ignited in the soul.

Focusing on the figure of Saint George, His Beatitude said that his life was not the life of a tragic hero, but of someone who knew that God had defeated death.

 

" We read the lives of the saints as spiritual food. We should read them constantly because by reading them we can begin to be modeled after them. By reading the lives of the saints the light of faith can be kindled in our souls."

We live in a time when people are materialistic and forget that one day they will leave all this behind. Success in the spiritual world is eternal.

God told us in the Gospel that if you have true faith and are given poison, you will not be poisoned. The life of Saint George was not the life of a tragic hero, he knew that God had defeated death. The Resurrection of Christ is a great victory, other victories are half-hearted.

"True faith is with our works, with spiritual enlightenment. Every day that we remember Saint George, let us also remember his life ," said His Beatitude.
