The Chamber of Advocacy raises the alarm about the violence of the lawyer/ Call

The Chamber of Advocacy has reacted to the violence against Sokol Mêngjesi, the lawyer of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

The Chamber of Advocates calls on the official authorities to carry out a full and independent investigation.

She emphasizes that the threat of lawyers for reasons related to the exercise of their duty seriously undermine the mission of the lawyer in the exercise of his profession and create difficult situations that must be evaluated to the maximum.

Full statement:

The Bar Association of Albania expresses its deep concern regarding the severe physical violence exercised this morning against the lawyer Sokol Mêngjesi, a member of the Bar Association of Tirana. The lawyer was hit several times on the head with a crowbar and due to the injuries he received, he was hospitalized.

This is not an isolated case of physical and psychological violence against lawyers in Albania, recalling the last unprecedented act of physical and psychological violence against a lawyer in the Lezhë Bar Association in April of this year.

Threats to lawyers, especially for reasons related to the exercise of their duties, not only seriously harm the mission of the lawyer in the exercise of his profession, but create difficult situations that must be evaluated to the maximum.

Based on the above, the Chamber of Advocates of Albania requests the official authorities to conduct a complete and independent investigation in the shortest possible time regarding this serious event.

At the same time, we guarantee all lawyers in the Republic of Albania that the Chamber of Advocates of Albania will be on the side of any lawyer who is subjected to violence of any kind by anyone, regardless of who directs the violence.

We are confident that our reaction will serve as an alarm bell for the law enforcement bodies not only for this case but also for other cases that affect the safety of the lives of lawyers and their families./ CNA
