The Special Appeal sentenced the elected mayor of Himara Municipality, Fredi Beleri, to two years in prison.

The Greek ambassador, Konstantina Kamitsi, who was present at the session, told the media that the process had irregularities and the principle of presumption of innocence was violated.

She pointed out that Beleri has been elected MEP and has the right to go to the European Parliament. 

"Unfortunately, many aspects of this case raise questions regarding the objectivity of the process, such as the issue of violation of the presumption of innocence, prolonged detention, disproportionate punishment and the denial of the right to swear. "With all the desire of the people of Himara, as she expressed through the election process, the municipality is still run today by people who were not elected by the voters," she said./ CNA
