Kujtim Cakrani, the lawyer for Freedom Party leader Ilir Meta, said today that Meta is a key figure in the country's political transition and as such cannot be treated as an ordinary citizen in relation to the justice system.

In a television interview, Cakrani commented on Meta's legal proceedings, which have been ongoing since the day of his arrest.

"Meta has been under investigation since the day of his arrest, but the procedure began much earlier. Despite this, he continues to be held in detention, albeit illegally. We have turned to the Supreme Court to demand accountability for what has been done in these eight months. There is a marked lack of transparency and violation of procedure. We are talking about a key figure in the Albanian transition. He cannot be treated as an ordinary citizen in relation to the justice system," Cakrani said. /CNA
