Asylum applications from Albanian citizens drop by 21.3% to 6 MI

The rates of emigration, at least through requests for asylum in the European Union countries, have slowed down significantly in the first half of this year.

Eurostat data revealed that for the January-June period there were 2,830 applications for asylum from Albanian citizens, with a decrease of 21.3% compared to the same period of 2023.

Compared to 2022, when the strongest post-pandemic emigration wave was recorded, asylum applications are 42% lower.

The main country where Albanians go to seek asylum is Italy, which received 31% of the applications, or 885 of them, in the 6-month period.

In recent years, the most favorite was France, because of its social policies. For the first 6 months, asylum applications in France were 790, from 1360 in the 6 months of the previous year, with almost half.

There was also a drop in requests to Germany by 550 in the first 6 months of 2024, from 785 in the same period a year ago.

In June 2024, 70,375 asylum applicants, non-EU citizens applied for international protection for the first time in European Union countries, a decrease of 17 percent compared to June of the previous year.

There were also 6 540 repeat applicants, representing an increase of 6% compared to June 2023 (6 185).

The largest group of people seeking asylum in June 2024 were Syrians, with 10,165 first-time applications, followed by Venezuelans (6,340) and Afghans (5,930).

Germany (16,770), Spain (14,855), Italy (11,685) and France (10,510) continued to receive the highest number of first-time asylum applications in June 2024, accounting for 76% of all applicants for the first time in the EU.

In June 2024, the EU total of first-time asylum applicants was 15.7 per hundred thousand people.

Compared to the population of each EU country (on 1 January 2024), the highest first-time application rates were recorded in Greece (45.4), followed by Spain (30.6) and Ireland (26.2).

In June this year, 2,395 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU, with the majority coming from Syria (675), Afghanistan (405) and Egypt (255).

The EU country that received the highest number of asylum applications from unaccompanied minors was Germany (725), ahead of Bulgaria (300), Greece (290), the Netherlands (260) and Spain (255)./ Monitor. al
