Third quarter, annual increase of 10% in air transport passengers

Air and sea transport activity increased in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, only 782 passengers used the railway. INSTAT data shows that the Port of Saranda surpassed that of Durrës in terms of the number of passengers in the third quarter of 2025.

In air transport, 31 airlines operated during the third quarter of 2025, of which 30 were foreign and 1 was Albanian. 139,923 aircraft flew in Albanian airspace, of which 83.6% were overflights.

The volume of goods (including mail) entering and leaving via air transport amounted to 714.3 tons, of which 78.5% are incoming goods and 21.5% are outgoing goods. Compared to the third quarter of 2024, in the third quarter of 2025, 3,892,761 passengers traveled by air from 3,534,751 passengers who traveled in the same period last year, increasing by 10.1%.

The volume of goods traded (export and import) by air in the third quarter of 2025 is 581 tons. Compared to the same period in 2024, this indicator has increased by 25.6%. The volume of goods imported by air in the third quarter of 2025 accounts for 0.03% of the total volume of imported goods.

The Port of Saranda bypasses Durrës for passengers

In Albania, four seaports operate which serve for the transport of goods: the Port of Durrës, Vlorë, Shengjin and the Port of Limjon (Saranda).

The Port of Durres is the main port in the country, from which, during the third quarter of 2025, 95.0% of the volume of goods transported by sea, or 2,135 thousand tons of goods, were transported. The total volume of goods transported from the Port of Durres increased by 17.5%, compared to the same period a year earlier.

The group of goods "Coke and refined petroleum products" accounts for 19.3% of goods transported from ports.

The group "Base metals; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment" accounts for 15.8% of goods transported from ports.

The group “Other mineral products (non-metallic)” accounts for 13.7% of goods transported from ports and the group of goods “Coal and lignite; crude oil and natural gas” accounts for 6.5% of goods transported from ports.

The number of passengers who have traveled through seaports in the country is 1,010,888 people. The Port of Saranda is the port from which 49.2% of passengers have traveled, followed by the Port of Durres with 40.8% and then the Port of Vlora with 10.0%.

In the third quarter of 2025, the volume of goods traded by sea (export and import) is 1,467 thousand tons. Compared to the same period in 2024, this indicator has increased by 5.6%. The volume of goods exported by sea in the third quarter of 2025 accounts for 32.2% of the total volume of exported goods. The volume of goods imported by sea in the third quarter of 2025 accounts for 65.8% of the total volume of imported goods.

Only 782 passengers on the train

The volume of goods transported via railways is 156.2 thousand tons, marking an increase of 13.7% compared to the third quarter of 2024.

“Coal and lignite, crude oil and natural gas” accounted for 75.8% of goods transported by rail, “Recycled raw materials; solid (municipal) waste and other waste” 23.2% and the group “Basic metals; fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment” accounted for 1.0%. (tab.1)

In the third quarter of 2025, 782 passengers used rail transport as a means of travel, marking a decrease of 62.9%, compared to the same period last year./ Monitor.al
