Online commerce is becoming a common instrument in the shopping routine everywhere in the world, but Albania lags behind in this indicator due to poor knowledge in technology and the lack of infrastructure that ensures easy access.

A Eurostat comparison showed that more than 50 percent of the population in Albania had never shopped online in 2022. This was the highest level in Europe, where only a sixth of the EU population reported that they had not had never shopped online.

In 2022, around 56.1% of people aged 16-74 in the EU confirmed that they had made an online purchase during the previous three months. In Albania, only 24 percent confirmed that they had made the purchase in the last 12 months in the 2022 survey.

Relatively few people use e-commerce regularly. Across the EU, around 17.2% of people aged 16-74 made online purchases from sellers in other EU member states in the three months before the 2022 survey. This figure was 1.0 percentage points higher lower than a year ago.

Online shopping was more common among young adults. As can be seen from the attached map, online shopping is more common in Central and Northern Europe, while in Southeastern Europe and Turkey, online shopping is not common.

In contrast Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Ireland over 95% of the population aged 16-74 had made online purchases.

The use of the Internet for shopping became very popular after the Covid-19 pandemic everywhere in Europe, but also in Albania. The restrictive measures prompted people to fulfill their needs for goods online. During this period, there was an increase in online shopping in Albania, which encouraged the use of technology in retail sales as well.

Albania ranks as an innovative developing country with a ranking of 41.7% compared to the EU average. The first group: Leading Innovator includes countries with performance above 125% of the EU average. This group includes: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden.

The second group: Strong Innovators includes countries with performance between 100%-125% of the EU average. This group includes: Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Germany, Ireland and Luxembourg.

The third group: Moderate Innovator includes countries with performance between 70%-100% of the EU average. This group includes: Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain. The fourth group: Innovator in Development includes countries with a performance lower than 70% of the EU average. This group includes: Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Albania and Slovakia./ Monitor
