A new artificial intelligence tool predicts diseases hidden in our DNA

Genetic analysis has been a key tool in diagnosing many diseases for years. However, until now, even when a genetic mutation was identified, it was not always clear what exactly it meant for the patient's health. A new development in artificial intelligence (AI) is coming to fill this critical gap.

Researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence tool, called V2P (Variant to Phenotype), that goes beyond just showing whether a genetic mutation is harmful, but can also predict the type of disease it is likely to cause. Put simply, the tool tries to answer not just "is there a problem?" but also "what problem could arise?".

What is different from existing tools?

Most genetic analysis systems today can assess whether a mutation in DNA is potentially pathogenic. However, this often leaves doctors and patients faced with thousands of possible variants, without a clear picture of which one is actually associated with symptoms.

V2P uses advanced machine learning techniques to associate genetic variants with the diseases or traits they may cause. In doing so, it prioritizes the most "suspect" mutations and helps experts focus on those with the greatest clinical significance.

How the AI ??system was trained

The tool was trained on a large database that included both harmful and benign genetic variants. Unlike previous approaches, V2P included disease information from the start, so it "learns" not only whether a mutation is dangerous, but also how it is associated with specific health problems./CNA
