How quitting social media improves depression and anxiety levels

According to a new study, giving up social media for a week can reduce depression, anxiety and insomnia in young people.

The research, published in the journal Jama Network Open, recruited 373 young people aged 18 to 24 to spend two weeks using Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and X, while the team collected their usage data.

Almost 80% of participants went on a week-long social media detox immediately after the test, while the rest gave up. All participants were asked to record how they felt before, during, and after the detox.

One in four participants noticed lower levels of depression after detoxing, while 16 percent noticed less anxiety and 15% saw improvements in insomnia symptoms.

Detoxification was most effective for young people who reported high or moderate levels of depression, anxiety or insomnia problems before the study./ CNA
