Short videos are "reforming" our brains/ Study that raises global

The American Psychological Association has published a large study confirming that short videos on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts have a significant negative impact on mental health and cognitive function.

The phenomenon widely known as "brain rot," also declared "Word of the Year" by the Oxford Dictionary last year, turns out to be not just a meme, but a neurocognitive syndrome with real consequences.

The study, which analyzed data from 98,299 participants across 71 studies, found that excessive consumption of short videos was associated with decreased attention span, impaired cognitive control, and increased addiction to fast-paced stimuli. Young people, according to the data, spend an average of 6.5 hours a day online.

According to researchers, constant exposure to fast-paced content causes habituation, activating the brain's reward system and making it harder for individuals to focus on slower-paced tasks like reading or learning. This leads to consequences such as social isolation, lower life satisfaction, problems with self-esteem and body image, poor sleep, anxiety, and increased feelings of loneliness.

Researchers emphasize the need for public awareness and new approaches that encourage more balanced use of short videos, warning of long-term risks to cognitive and emotional health. /CNA
