A new artificial intelligence tool could speed up the discovery of treatments for heart disease, according to a recent scientific study.
The new tool, developed by researchers at Imperial College London, aims to identify gene variants linked to heart disease. In doing so, it could help scientists find drugs that might be effective for specific forms of heart disease.
The tool, called CardioKG, combines detailed cardiac imaging tests with large medical databases. It was developed based on imaging data from thousands of people participating in the UK Biobank database.
According to Declan O'Regan, head of the Cardiac Computer Imaging Group at Imperial College London, the device's graphs have the advantage of linking information about genes, drugs and diseases into a single framework.
Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death and disability in the European Union, causing around 1.7 million deaths each year and affecting the lives of 62 million people, according to the latest figures. /CNA
