The Portugal national team is facing widespread criticism after their draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening World Cup match.

Roberto Martinez's side's performance has come under scrutiny, with the main focus being on striker Cristiano Ronaldo. The 34-year-old failed to make his mark, with accusations of selfish play due to his desire to score the goal that would make him the only player in history to score in six different World Cups.

This haste was particularly noticeable in a move where he denied midfielder Bruno Fernandes a clear scoring opportunity. The move was also heavily criticised by former France striker Thierry Henry, who claimed that Ronaldo had mistakenly placed himself in the path of the ball for his own personal gain rather than creating space for his teammate.

"It's the team that should score, not you. Cristiano has found himself in this situation many times. With a move towards the goal, he would have forced the defender to close the six-meter area. But, because he wanted to score, he shot before the ball went to Bruno Fernandes. His teammate's reaction says it all," Henry declared.
