UEFA and Nielsen report: Football strengthens its position as the most followed

Football continues to be the most followed and most practiced sport in Albania, according to the findings of the "UEFA Grow Market Research" report, conducted by UEFA in collaboration with the prestigious Nielsen agency.

The study highlights a significant increase in interest in football in the country in recent years. While in 2016, 65% of Albanians declared that they followed football, today this figure has reached 78%, ranking Albania at the top of Europe for interest in this sport and significantly above the European average of 48%.

Football remains the most popular sport for both men and women. Male interest stands at 91%, while female interest has increased significantly from 42% in 2016 to 65% currently. Growth has been recorded across all age groups, with the 45-54 age group showing the greatest progress.

The report also shows that over four in ten Albanians are very passionate about football, while seven in ten consider themselves fans of the sport. The main reasons that bring Albanians closer to football are the quality of the game, the time spent with family and friends, as well as the atmosphere offered by the stadiums.

In addition to being the most popular sport, football is also the most practiced sporting activity by adults. Participation in football has increased significantly from 18% in 2016 to 34% currently. According to the study, three in five Albanians have played football at least once in their lives.

Most amateur footballers choose to practice the sport informally, with friends and in the community, while the physical and emotional benefits remain the main motives that keep them connected to the game.

The report's data confirms the positive impact of the Football Federation's investments in the development of the sport, through massification projects, infrastructure improvements, and expanding opportunities to play football throughout the country.

With a positive perception of 7.5 points, football continues to be the sport with the best image in Albania, maintaining a significant difference compared to any other sport.
