A decisive victory at the start, the USA achieves historic success

The United States national team has made a positive start to the 2026 World Cup, defeating Paraguay with a comprehensive 4-1 score in the group stage match held in Los Angeles.

With this result, the Americans improve their record in the group stages, where they have only one loss in their last ten matches.

The first goal came after a Christian Pulisic drive from the left wing; his pass was deflected by Weston McKennie and misdirected into his own net by Paraguayan defender Damian Bobadilla. The Americans continued to press the ball forward, while Paraguay tried to respond with Enquisos. In the 28th minute, a goal by Folarin Balogun was disallowed for Pulisic being offside, but just three minutes later, the same player scored after another assist from Pulisic, doubling the lead to 2-0.

Mauricio Pochettino's team was not satisfied with that and created other consecutive chances through Richards and Malik Tillman. In the last seconds of the first half, the Eagles scored the third goal.

After a deep pass from Tillman, Balogun controlled the ball, eluded two defenders and scored with a curling shot into the triangle. The moment marked a historic moment for the United States, as it was the first time in their history at a World Cup that they had ended the first half with a three-goal lead.

In the second half, Paraguay tried to change the course of the game and managed to narrow the gap 17 minutes before the end of regular time.

Maurício scored his first goal for the national team, beating goalkeeper Mat Fres. However, in extra time, the USA sealed the final score at 4-1 through Reyna, who scored after a long run of 26 consecutive passes.

This is the USA's biggest win in a World Cup, surpassing the 3-0 victory over the same opponent in 1930.
