Severe punishment expected, Ronaldo risks World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in the match between Ireland and Portugal after an elbow to Collins in the 61st minute.

Portugal lost 2-0 and failed to officially secure qualification for the World Cup, something they are expected to achieve in the next match. Ronaldo's exclusion leaves the team without its captain for the decisive match against Armenia.

Under FIFA regulations, violent conduct can result in a suspension of three matches or more. If the incident is classified as a serious incident, Ronaldo could miss Portugal's first two matches at the World Cup.

He has previously confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be his last major tournament. The final decision on his suspension will be made by an independent disciplinary committee.
