The study, cars in Albania move at an average speed of 33 km per hour

Infrastructure, roads, ports, railways help the movement of goods and people at a lower cost and at a higher speed thus contributing to the economic development of a country.

A recent World Bank study "Reducing economic distances" refers that the average speed of vehicle movements in Albania is about 33 kilometers per hour. As can be seen in the graph below, the low speed of vehicles is a feature of poor countries.

In Europe, Albania leaves behind Bosnia, Ukraine, Montenegro and Armenia and Georgia. Then in the ranking come the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America (see the chart below).

Globally, Slovenia tops the list for the highest speed limit at around 70 kilometers per hour, followed by Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus and Spain.

On the other hand, the countries with the speed of movement starting at 0 kilometers per hour are Haiti and Nepal, which are almost rural countries.

The World Bank estimates that cost reductions and increased speed in the movement of goods within and outside countries can increase trade volumes and affect trade patterns, while high domestic transport costs can impede the benefits of trade liberalization.

The high cost of internal transport in African countries is one of the main reasons that the impact of trade liberalization has been limited and geographically unbalanced on the continent.

An earlier study found that a one-day reduction in land travel time was associated with a 7 percent increase in African exports.

Reductions in domestic transport costs and time affect not only international trade, but also domestic trade, productivity and investment. In India, for example, a 1 percent decrease in truck unit costs is associated with a 2.8-3.9 percent increase in domestic trade flows.

Reducing transportation costs and increasing speed also positively affects the value of real estate where transportation lines pass.

As the study shows, there is a direct relationship between income per capita and the speed of movement on the road. The average speed was evaluated by the World Bank in 242,833 road segments in 134 countries of the world, some of which are also in Albania.

Currently, Albania is developing with priority investments in the road segments in Corridor 8 and Corridor 10, arteries as part of the main European network. In the longer term, the road lines will also be accompanied by a railway.

However, movement in the central part continues to be slow due to heavy traffic, especially on the Tirana-Durres axis. Most of the investments in infrastructure in recent years have been concentrated in the South area of ??the country./ Monitor magazine
