Albanians lead for residence permits granted by Italy in 2023

In 2023, 330,730 residence permits were granted in Italy, a figure down by 26.4% compared to 2022. According to Istat, which published the data, the decline is related to the decrease in permits granted for asylum and international protection, down by 47.6%.

But what are the reasons that led these people to move to Italy?

From a general point of view, 128 of the 330,000 permits granted are related to family reunification. This figure is equal to 39% of the total, followed by 32.1% of asylum or international protection permits.

Permits for work reasons are 39,000, while those for students are 27,000 (increasing by 9.4% compared to the previous year).

The chart, which shows the top 10 nationalities for permits granted in 2023, shows the reasons that have pushed people to Italy.

Not surprisingly, the largest share of permits granted to Ukrainian citizens (84.1% of the total) is related to asylum and international protection. Among the countries from which people move to Italy for humanitarian reasons are Bangladesh, Egypt, Pakistan and Peru.

Albania, Morocco, India and Tunisia are countries from which people leave for Italy mainly in search of a job.

Another interesting fact is related to China. 45.3% of the more than 8,000 permits granted in 2023 are related to students who have chosen Italian schools and universities for their education.

With 3,779 students in Italy, China is the second most represented country in the school banks in Italy, followed by Iran (4,209 students in 2023) and Turkey (2,074).

Looking at the age of the 3.6 million people living in Italy, thanks to a residence permit, the average age is just over 36 years old and 49.2% are women. Minors represent 19.5% of the total.
