108 thousand habitable dwellings without water network, occupy 15% of the total

The construction sector has been involved in rapid developments in recent years, but the quality of construction for a large part of the housing in which people live is outside the requirements of the time.

Cens 2023 data show that 108 thousand dwellings out of 726 thousand that are habitable do not have a water supply network inside.

As can be seen from the attached table, 28,899 habitable houses in 2023 had the water supply network outside the house. While about 72 thousand other apartments had the water supply network inside the building, but not in the apartment where people live.

About 7,000 thousand dwellings in which people live do not have any type of water supply system. Lack of total access to water indicates extreme poverty.

According to INSTAT data, entrances and habitable houses without water inside occupy about 15% of the total number of habitable dwellings.

The 2023 Census collected information on the number of ordinary dwellings and their characteristics, including basic services, area used for housing and period of construction.

The 2023 census counted 1,082,529 ordinary dwellings. Individual houses represented 47.0% of these dwellings, while 39.9% of them are buildings. A small category of dwellings are semi-detached dwellings (8.1%) and terraced houses (5.0%).

From the total number of ordinary dwellings, at the time of the census, there were 726,325 (67.1%) inhabited dwellings, estimating 32.9% uninhabited ordinary dwellings. The rate of unoccupied ordinary dwellings ranged from 24.3% for semi-detached dwellings to 39.4% for dwellings in blocks of flats, individual houses and terraced houses were each 29.2 and 29.8% respectively.

About a quarter (26.1%) of ordinary dwellings were built before 1981 and in approximately equal percentages, in the 20-year period, 1981-2000, 37.5% were built, and from 2001 onwards 36.4% have been built./ Monitor magazine
