Common cold symptoms that could be signs of cancer

Around 12,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with head and neck cancer each year, according to Cancer Research UK.

They affect the mouth, nose and throat but remain relatively obscure for millions of Britons.

Jiri Kubes, medical director of cancer facility Proton Therapy UK, said head and neck cancer can often be difficult to recognize because the symptoms are similar to the common cold.

Here are cold-like symptoms and cancers that can be a sign of them:

1. Sore throat

We all have a sore throat from time to time. It can feel itchy, make swallowing difficult, and even make your mouth taste bad.

According to the NHS, a sore throat is usually a symptom of strep, the common cold, allergies or other upper respiratory tract illnesses, such as flu.

However, persistent sore throat is one of the most common symptoms of throat cancer.

2. Neck swelling

Having a slightly swollen or sore neck is usually a sign that your body is fighting off an infection, such as a cold, flu or even glandular fever.

The pain will come from your glands, which will feel like soft lumps on either side of your neck.

In cases of a superficial infection, the swollen glands, also known as lymph nodes, will go down within one to two weeks.

3. Ulcers

Mouth ulcers are very common and should clear up on their own within a week.

4. Blocked ears

Having blocked, ringing ears is a common sign of a bad cold.

The NHS says a less common culprit of blocked ears is a rare cancer called nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

5. Hoarse voice

A change in voice is usually a sign of laryngitis.

But if the voice remains altered for more than three weeks, it could be a sign of laryngeal cancer./ CNA
