Between 1934 and 1939, Romania had a land on the Ionian Sea, in Saranda. King Zogu had donated the land to Nicolae Iorga, as a sign of gratitude for his contribution to the history and independence of Albania, as well as to the fate of the Balkans.

The historian then donated 50 percent of the area to the Romanian state and thus Romania gained access to the Mediterranean Sea, via the Ionian Sea. The Romanian Institute in Saranda (Casa Iorga) bore the name of the founder from its beginnings. The house was built in 1937 on a plot of almost 1 thousand square meters in the coastal city.

The territory was finally annexed by Italy, along with all of Albania, in April 1939. This topic was brought up again recently in bilateral discussions between the two states, underscoring the importance of quickly ending the retrocession process of the House of Iorga in Sarandë, property of the Romanian state nationalized after the establishment of the communist regime and sold by the Albanian authorities to private persons after the fall of the totalitarian regime in 1992.

In parallel with the administrative and jurisdictional steps, the issue of recovering the building was raised by the Romanian side during several bilateral meetings, including at the highest level, with the request for the implementation of the decisions of the Albanian courts./ Euronews Albania
