Suspected oncogenic drugs "feed" cancer cells

Soft drinks, packaged foods and sweets, as well as energy drinks are now available anywhere and anytime.

Various studies in the past have pointed out how they can harm our health, increasing weight and causing a number of chronic diseases, such as diabetes.

A newer study highlights a component of these products that is also blamed for tumorigenesis, but with a difference in its function.

According to new research from the University of Washington, fructose does not directly feed tumors. Instead, the scientists noticed that the liver turns fructose into "food" for cancer cells, an exciting discovery that could open new avenues for treating many different types of cancer.

In terms of its chemical structure, fructose is similar to glucose. They are both common types of sugars, with the same chemical formula, but differ in the way the body metabolizes them.

Glucose is processed throughout the body, while fructose is metabolized almost entirely by the small intestine and liver. Although both substances occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, dairy products and grains, fructose from corn syrup in particular is widely used by the food industry as a sweetener. / CNA
