Experts have warned that a growing number of children are at risk of going blind due to spending too much time on their mobile phones.

British children are being forced to wear special contact lenses to prevent the growth of the eyeball, after doctors found an influx of teenagers with the worst possible outcome of myopia (shortening of the eye's light).

"Globally, a 46% increase in myopia (shortsightedness) has been observed over the past three decades, and the latest increase is believed to stem from children trying to look at their phone screens instead of spend time outside looking at distant horizons," The Sun reported.

Studies suggest that cases of myopia in young people increase the chance of macular development (prominent vision problems) by 41%.

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness, and myopia (shortening of the eye's light) can be caused by prolonged screen time, increasing the risk of macular degeneration.

Children should spend time outside playing and looking at things in the distance, which help reduce this risk./ CNA
