A new study has found that depression increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, and is more concerning for women.

The study, published in the "Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC Asia)", has revealed a link between depression and cardiovascular disease (CVD), with an increased risk especially for women.

Depression is the third leading cause of morbidity globally and its associations with cardiovascular events are well known.

The study included 4.1 million participants aged 36-52 and found that the hazard ratio for depression in relation to CVD was 1.39 for men and 1.64 for women, compared to people without depression.

The authors point out that women may experience more severe and persistent symptoms of depression, and may be more likely to develop depression during critical periods of hormonal change, such as pregnancy or menopause.

In addition, women's greater susceptibility to traditional risk factors and differences in health care and treatment may contribute to the increased risk of CVD in women.

This study highlights the importance of tailoring CVD prevention and management strategies on a gender basis./ CNA
